One of the most dramatic battles of WWII was the attempted capture by Allied forces of a bridge over the Rhine River at the Dutch city of Arnhem in September of 1944. Over 40,000 airborne soldiers and a similar number of ground forces converged to repel the German army, numbering approximately 100,000. Though unsuccessful in its ultimate objective, this battle became a legendary example of the audacity and bravery of the Allied troops and inspired the 1977 acclaimed film A Bridge Too Far.
A series of panels designed for display at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. feature original letters, journals, and documents that provide insight into the impact on the lives of citizens and soldiers caught up in the mayhem of battle. An excerpt from one soldiers’ journal reads: “Thur 21: Lose bridges. Retreat from Arnhem to Oosterbeek. Very heavy losses. Have only pistol and 4 rounds left.”
